ART & PERFORMANCE

The Artist is in, please ring the bell

The Maldon District has a number of galleries showcasing different forms of visual art, from professional to amateur work, often inspired by the unique landscape and history of the district. Art exhibitions are regularly held in the Maeldune Heritage Centre and local village halls.

The Burnham-on-Crouch Art Trail and the Maldon Art Trail take place over the summer period. Going from strength to strength each year, a wide range of local artists display in venues in and around the high streets of Burnham-on-Crouch and Maldon. Artists are inspired by the big skies and unique light of the East Essex Coast and produce a range of media including ceramic, glass, sculpture, oils and watercolour.

The 'Tractor Shed' is the permanent home for one of our many highly regarded local amateur groups who put on a wide range of plays and shows. Touring theatre companies visit the Maldon District regularly and during the summer, you may wish to watch outdoor performances in the amphitheatre in Promenade Park.

For information about events going on in the Maldon District, you may like to search the events calendar or visit the Maldon Tourist Information Centre, or the Burnham-on-Crouch TIC to pick up an events list.

Round off your visit with that all important souvenir from one of our many independent retailers, along with a great meal, and a pint of locally brewed real ale in the friendly atmosphere of a micro pub. The Maldon District has acres of unspoilt countryside, including breathtaking coastline, tranquil rivers, a historic canal and places to indulge in your favourite outdoor pursuit. Walking and cycling are a great way to explore areas off the beaten track.

The shift of seasons brings a different character to the ever changing landscape. As spring turns to summer, colourful wild flowers illuminate the hedgerows. As autumn and winter approaches, the Brent geese arrive from Siberia and a rich variety of wading birds reclaim the mudflats. The Maldon District has a number of nature reserves, providing ideal habitats for often rare and unusual species.

INDEPENDENT RETAIL

The Maldon District is home to a great variety of independent shops that have their own appeal and character. In the towns of Maldon and Burnham-on-Crouch, there is an eclectic mix of specialist stores and independent retailers that sell everything from local delicacies and souvenirs, to antiques, clothes and hardware. Among these local shops, you will also find popular chain stores and banks, but these certainly do not overshadow the independent flavour of the Maldon District.

Experience our gastro menu by visiting our independent restaurants, cafés and tea rooms. You can also visit local markets in the district for excellent fresh produce, and a variety of other items. The Burnham-on-Crouch Farmer's market is certainly a highlight of the month, where a range of producers bring their fresh produce directly to the public. Check out our local page for more information about market days.
