VE Day 75 celebrations

Friday 8 May 2020 will mark 75 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

In 1945, more than one million people celebrated in the streets across the nation to mark the end of the hosilities in Europe.

In London, crowds massed in places like Trafalgar Square, the Mall and Buckingham Palace, where King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, alongside Prime Minister Winston Churchill, appeared before the crowds.

In 2020, we will be celebrating this special day as we all think of our loved ones for a different reason.

In light of the current health situation in the UK, we have put together a series of online resources, activities and other useful information for you to celebrate the occasion from the safety of your home.

Why not host you very own ‘stay-at-home party’; we are encouraging residents to decorate their homes with red, white and blue bunting and have a picnic in their garden or living room.

We are also encouraging everyone to undertake the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War Two’ at 3pm on the 8th May, from the safety of their own home, by standing up and raising a glass of refreshment of their choice.

Using this unique opportunity, we encourage you to pay tribute to the many millions at home and abroad that gave so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedom we have today.

VE DAY - 75 years on

Local historian and Maldon District Councillor Stephen Nunn takes a look back at how the District celebrated VE Day in 1945.

A collection of photos showing residents from the Maldon District celebrating VE Day

Many of the celebrations in 1945 were never captured on film, we have been very lucky that some residents were able to caputre the moment our district heard the news and spilled out onto the streets accross the District.

Do you have any pictures from that day? We would love to share them with the community on our website. If you would like to send us any photos from VE Day or the Maldon District during the second world war, please email
