Members of Marconi Sailing Club at Steeple have planted an incredible 101 new tree saplings around their base at Stansgate Abbey Farm as part of the Queen's Green Canopy initiative.
The young trees, a mixture of native species sourced from the Woodland Trust, were donated to the club by members Ray and Maureen Ball, and were planted on 12 March in just 90 minutes by an enthusiastic working party of younger members.
The new trees are designed to replace a number of trees that were destroyed during recent storms, and to replace overgrown brambles, scrub and ivy that had built up around the edges of the field. The club had originally ordered 100 trees, but found they had an extra one, so that was included as well!
Each sapling was carefully planted, staked and protected with a guard, and younger members of the club will be tasked with keeping an eye on them as they grow to give them the best chance of becoming fully grown trees to support local wildlife.
Club members celebrated the planting with a commemorative cake, and installed an official Queen's Green Canopy plaque so the reason for planting the trees will be remembered long after the Platinum Jubilee.

Thousands of trees were planted that will develop into a mixed deciduous woodland. At the far side of the site is a footbridge providing access to a network of footpaths on adjoining farmland.
Heybridge Basin
A quiet and peaceful park, with marshland flora & fauna. Ideal for access to the sea wall, much of the site is un-managed reclaimed marshland. The park contains a small playsite and dog-agility equipment.
Heybridge
Located near to the centre of Heybridge, this site has good access from the surrounding area. Large car park, modern hall, enclosed children's play site and football pitch.Also know locally as the 'Planny' after Plantation Hall.
Latchingdon
This is a large well equipped rec ground with good access from the surrounding area. Car park, village hall/pavilion, children's play equipment, full size & mini football pitch, youth shelter, small woodland area & dog walking area.
Bradwell-On-Sea
Attractive site, surrounded by hedgerows and with a number of mature oak trees. Village hall, car park, enclosed children's play area, basketball net, football pitch, picnic benches, youth shelter, BMX skills ramp.
Little Totham
This small, triangular shaped site is located at the centre of the village. Swings, slide and pond. Pedestrians are advised to take care when crossing the road to this site.
Great Braxted
This attractive hilltop site, surrounded by hedges and mature oak trees, offers views towards Witham and the central Essex plain. Cricket pitch and pavilion, basketball net, childrens play site and kickabout area.
Southminster
One of the largest and best equipped parish fields in the Maldon District, this open, flat site is bordered to the south by a large flooded former gravel pit.
Heybridge
This small site is accessible from Elizabeth Way and the Elms Farm development. Junior Football goals, basketball net and picnic bench.
Essex
It is an old garden site and suffered a period of neglect but is now being cared for by volunteers from Maldon & Heybridge Horticultural Society. The garden is very small and normally open to the public for a short time once a month.
St Lawrence
Located at the southern end of the village and enclosed on all sides by a hawthorn hedge. Large car park, full size and junior football pitches, enclosed children's play site and CCTV cameras.

Tollesbury
This is a large, open site with good views across the Blackwater Estuary towards St Lawrence. Car park, hall, cricket and football pitches, pavilion, unfenced play site, benches and monument.
Mayland
An area of grassland adjacent to the sea wall in Mayland. Across the middle of the site is the remnants of an old borrow dyke which is now dry most of the year.
