Sustainable Jubilee Street Parties

Street parties are all about fun and friendship – and with a bit of thought they can also be eco-friendly as well. If you want to avoid picking up bags and bags of single-use plastic rubbish at the end, here are some ideas for keeping it sustainable.

Tableware

It’s easy to get sucked in by the bright colours of the plastic partyware in all the shops – but if you think the Queen’s 70-year reign is a long time, it’s worth considering that a plastic cup takes up to 500 years to disintegrate in landfill! Here are some alternatives:

Bring your own – ask all the guests to bring their own plate, bowl and cup, ideally something unbreakable, such as kids’ plastic or melamine plates or metal camping crockery.
Buy secondhand – charity shops are full of dinner services and china, so why not buy a mix-and-match selection for the whole street? They can be popped in someone’s dishwasher after the event and boxed up ready for the next celebration – it could become a great resource for the neighbourhood as well as benefiting charity. You could even buy some cutlery as well.
Eat finger food – if you do the right kind of food you can almost do away with crockery altogether! Opt for non-sticky items that can be picked up, or use wood or bamboo cocktail sticks.
Choose biodegradable paper – if you must have disposable tableware then choose carefully. Plastic is the worst choice, and some “paper” plates also have coatings that mean they won’t biodegrade naturally. If you choose a plain, uncoated paper plate (these are usually the cheapest kind), they can be recycled with your paper providing they are clean, with no sticky or greasy patches. Otherwise, at least they will biodegrade in landfill in around five years.
Alternative disposable plates – Sugarcane or “bagasse” plates and cups are made from the waste stems from sugarcane plants and are a renewable resource that is compostable in just four months. They are inexpensive too! Crockery and cutlery made from bamboo, palm leaf and other plant fibres are also worth a look.

Linens

Before you buy acres of plastic tablecloths and printed serviettes, could you do better? What about making use of the fabric tablecloths that everyone has lurking unused at the back of their cupboards? Sheets or tablecloths from charity shops make good colourful table covers and can be re-used. You could even buy red, white and blue fabric to make table covers, napkins and bunting that will last many Royal events to come!

Drinks containers

You might consider buying a keg of beer from a local brewery – it can be returned afterwards and reused. If people bring their own beer glass (a chance to dig out that old pewter family tankard!) it is totally waste free. Alternatively, make sure you have two separate, large, well-labelled boxes so people can easily recycle glass bottles in one and plastic bottles and cans in the other. Don’t forget to pick up some pink bags!
