About

If you walk around Burnham-on-Crouch look out for the three large buoys that now decorate the street scene. These historic buoys, dating from as early as 1900 and 1917, were once out in the water of the Crouch estuary, helping to guide ships safetly home, but when they were replaced at sea with more modern versions that have a light, these trustworthy buoys were used to add a bit of maritime interest to the street scene.

The buoys are known as Lateral Marks, which indicate the port and starboard hand sides of the safe routes that ships need to follow. They are coloured red (port hand marks) and green (starboard hand marks). You can find the green one at Burnham Yacht Harbour, and the red ones in Belvedere Road and Coronation Road.
