About

Southminster War Memorial stands in the grounds of St Leonard's Church. It is a 2.4m stone obelisk on a two-stepped base and square plinth on a paved area with flower beds. It honours the memory of 65 local people killed in the First World War, nine from the Second World War and one victim of the Korean War. The memorial was unvelied in June 1920 and rededicated in 1971.

In addition there is a calligraphy Roll of Honour inside the church in memory of those who served and fell in the First World War - a total of 245 names - and a stone cross in the churchyard.

St Leonard's churchyard is home to six Commonwealth War Graves: Able Seaman David Beale, Cadet Claude Angeloff, Corporal Arthur Hurrell and Private William Fisk who died in World War I, and Lance Corporal Harry Cardy and Sgt Victor Smith, just 18 when he died, from World War 2.

St Leonard's church dates back to about 1100 AD.
