About

Pretty St Margaret's Church sits on the main A414 into Maldon, next to Woodham Mortimer Hall. The south wall of the nave is 12th century, but the majority of the Grade II Listed building was reconstructed in the 19th century. Features include a restored 15th century window, a 13th century font on a more modern platform, a bell tower and a wooden rood. Most of the stained glass windows are 19th century and include one dedicated to Queen Victoria on her Diamond Jubilee.

The interesting graveyard, where the parish often holds a "tea on the tombstones" on the August Bank Holiday Monday, contains memorials with inscriptions from 1693 onwards, along with the impressive raised memorial to obstetrics pioneer Dr Peter Chamberlen.

There is a war memorial commemorating nine people from the village who died during the two World Wars. Opposite the church, on the other side of the main road, is Grade II Listed memorial erected in 1825 in the memory of local benefactor William Alexander, who left his lands to the Worshipful Company of Coopers for the benefit of the poor.
