About

Tollesbury War Memorial stands in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, a beautiful Grade II* Listed church. The memorial is a wooden cross on a three-stepped brick base. The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 7 November 1948. Inside the church there is a modern British Legion Roll of Honour in a wooden frame with the names of 48 who died in World War One and 16 names from World War Two.

The churchyard contains nine Commonwealth War Graves from World War One and Two, commemorating Petty Officer Herbert Walter Frost, Flight Serjeant A R Page, Private S Rose, Petty Officer G A Herbert, Corporal Archibald Lewis, Private Murray Rice, Private A E Service, Trimmer T G Walters and Private George Farthing. Tollesbury war memorial is also in the church grounds.

There is a second, stone war memorial on the playing fields at Victory Recreation Ground, Elysian Fields. This was built in 1922 when the recreation grounds were donated to the village by Frederick Hasler in memory of "the men and women of this village who took part in the Great War 1914-1918 and the victory they helped to achieve". An additional memorial was added for The Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, when poplar trees were also planted to commemorate the men from Tollesbury who died in the two wars.
