About

Walkers along the sea wall at Tollesbury will be fascinated by the large red ship moored on the saltmarshes. This is the Trinity Lightvessel, which was built in 1954 for Trinity House - the organisation which looks after shipping navigation marks around the UK. It was converted to a residential centre in 1990 for the Fellowship Afloat Charitable Trust.

Its exterior appearance has changed very little, but inside, it has been converted into an activity venue for youth clubs, schools, churches, special needs groups and those wishing to gain sailing and power boating qualifications. Guests are served by the centre staff and expert volunteers, who form the lively Christian community which is Fellowship Afloat.

The 42m long lightship LV15 was built in 1954, and worked around Morecambe Bay, Scarweather, Breaksea, Channel, St Gowan, Helwick, Dudgeon. as well as the Bristol Channel. She was refurbished in 1978, and retired in 1988 when she was bought by Fellowship Afloat and taken to her current position in Tollesbury.
