Autumn is a wonderful time to explore nature with a country walk

Walking in the autumn can be an absolute pleasure - no fierce sun beating down on your head or worrying about suncreaming every centimetre, no more parched grass and angry wasps. Instead, enjoy the autumn colours in comfort, layering up with jumpers and scarves to keep out the cold.

Remember that it will be getting darker earlier, so make sure you set out early if you are planning a longer route, and check the weather forecast in advance to see if a raincoat is a good idea. Mud can often be a feature of autumn walks, so choose footwear accordingly!

You might want to take a bag to pick up some glossy conkers (inedible but lovely to look at), chestnuts to roast later, hazelnuts and beech nuts to snack on or rose hips to make into jam. Foraging can be a great reason for a walk and The Woodland Trust has more information on what is ripe and tasty.

The amazing colours of the autumn leaves are a good enough reason to get outside, and following a long hot summer they are more glorious than usual - Promenade Park is particularly good for autumn colour.

A Tale of Three Villages - Walk it Local

2.96 miles. This walk explores three pretty villages in the north of the district - Wickham Bishops, Little Braxted and Great Totham. Taking in tree-lined lanes and footpaths, this gently undulating walk is a great introduction to this part of the district, which has many possibilities for longer walks as well.
Woodham Walter Wilderness - Walk it Local

2.7 miles. This undulating walk explores the pretty village of Woodham Walter and its nearby woodland, known as The Wilderness, plus a visit to the scenic Hoe Mill Lock with its canal boats and wildlife.
Mundon Furze

One of the last areas of surviving ancient woodland in the Dengie peninsular. The dominant tree species are oak and ash. Although there is something of interest to see all year round, the best time to visit is early morning in the spring.
A Great Stroll in Little Braxted - Walk it Local

3.3 miles. The quiet lanes around Little Braxted make a pleasant walk with plenty to explore along the way, including a richly decorated Grade I listed church, fine old buildings with decorative chimneys and an unusual miniature railway at Braxted Bakery, where you can also stop for refreshments.
