LEISURE IN THE DISTRICT

The Maldon District boasts a wealth of leisure activities, facilities and clubs that enrich local communities and attract visitors from far and wide. Major investment during 2015/16 has seen the completion of development works to both council-owned leisure centres, with many independent facilities also being improved and upgraded.

Maldon District is highly regarded within the sailing community, a fact that is recognised both nationally and internationally. This trend is evident in many other sports and leisure activities, with a great number of clubs offering a huge variety of opportunities throughout the district.

SPORT & EXERCISE

The Maldon District has numerous sustainable sports and leisure clubs, with more than 100 organisations offering fantastic service standards and great member numbers. Whether you are looking to improve on an existing interest or experience something new, whether it be competitively, socially or just for the fun of it, you will find a club that caters to you.
Clubs often hold open days for people who'd like a taster session to see if the sport is right for them and whether they'd like to commit to learning it. Sessions are also held for absolute beginners and novices, so that you can begin a brand new sport from scratch.

The diverse landscape of the Maldon District makes it an ideal place to go walking and there are plenty of walks to choose from which will suit all tastes and abilities. With seventy-five miles of saltmarsh coast, the sea walls are always popular and they offer brilliant views of the River Blackwater and the River Crouch.

There are also numerous nature reserves across the district, which are perfect for walking and spotting wildlife. Most of these nature reserves are managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.
The Maldon District is fortunate in having a tantalising choice for leisure and fitness. No matter where you find yourself in the district, there will be a facility close by. The two council-owned leisure centres have recently been fully refurbished and improved. Both offer a wide range of activities and are based in Maldon and Burnham-on-Crouch.

There are many other fantastic facilities throughout the Maldon District, whether it be for fitness, indoor or outdoor sports, swimming, golf, football, tennis, horse riding and more.

PARKS & OPEN SPACES

From quiet, secluded nature reserves to its popular parks, the Maldon District's open spaces offer something for everyone. Discover remote areas of natural beauty and unwind in rural tranquillity. Or enjoy more exuberant activities on our playing fields and leisure centres. The main two parks in the Maldon District are Riverside Park and Promenade Park.

With regular events, funfairs, circuses, charity days, and open air cinemas, these two parks are popular year round for both residents and visitors alike. Throughout the district, there are numerous recreation grounds and fields for you to enjoy throughout the year. Many have play areas for children, sports facilities, as well as paths where you can go for a walk with friends and family.

Promenade Park, Maldon
Promenade Park in Maldon, also known as the Prom, is the most popular park in the district and has undergone major refurbishment in recent years. You can spend all day at the Prom as there's something for the whole family to enjoy. Along with the Splash Park and beach huts, the Promenade Park has several playgrounds, the brand new Pirates Bay Adventure Golf, three large sand pits, an ornamental lake, model boating and crabbing lakes, skateboard ramps and a large BMX area.

The Prom is also home to the Museum in the Park, which offers a charming perspective of the town’s history, and the statue of Byrhtnoth, whose army was defeated at the Battle of Maldon 991. From Promenade Park, you can also walk to Northey Island; its causeway was the site of the battle and is the oldest battlefield site in England.
This is the main park in Burnham-on-Crouch and overlooks the River Crouch and RSPB's Wallasea Island. The park can be reached by a pleasant walk along the quayside which takes you past historic pubs, resident houseboats and the Burnham-on-Crouch & District Museum. Situated in Riverside Park is the newly refurbished Dengie Hundred Sports Centre, which offers a wide range of facilities and classes.

Riverside Park has won numerous Green Flag Awards and has a naturalised area which boasts an extensive wildflower meadow and provides habitats for a wide variety of wildlife. A network of all weather pathways encourages exploration of the woodland, hedgerows and ponds. The large open space of Riverside Park allows for plenty of room for children to play, as well as for picnics, particularly during the summer.

FISHING

There are many great spots for fishing across the Maldon District, from the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation, to shallow lakes, farm reservoirs, ponds and untamed rivers.

For more information about fishing spots, check out the Maldon Angling Society. Established since 1895, the Maldon Angling society is home to some of the finest fishing in Essex. You can also check out Chigborough Fisheries, which is home to fifty-three acres of complex lakes and caters for both Trout and Coarse Anglers.

You can also go on fishing trips with Charter Discovery, which consists of mainly uptiding or downtiding in 10-15m of water with light lines and normally 8oz breakaway weights. Novices, seasoned anglers and parties can be catered for.
