Beeleigh Weir at low water

About

Beeleigh Falls is home to a series of water falls, locks and weirs on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.

The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation was built in the 1790's to move goods such as grain, timber, lime and coal by horse drawn barge to and from Chemlsford. it is located at the meeting of the River Chelmer and River Blackwater and offers excellent views of the areas two main rivers.

The Falls provide unique enviornmental area due to the freshwater rivers feeding into the tidal salt water below the wier, helping to provide Maldon with it's famous sea salt.

Local opposition to the canal led to it being cut by hand from the Falls to bypass Maldon and lead to Heybridge Basin, this can be reached by following the tow path and footpaths that skirt the canal the whole way.

The main weir allowed the canal to remain at a constant height when the river was in flood. During times of heavy rainfall, water can often be seen cascading over the weir and into the river Chelmer on it's way to the Blackwater Estuary.

The area also contains the privately owned Beeleigh Abbey and Beeleigh Mill house and the remains of the mill which can be reached by using the footpaths nearby.

Beeleigh can be reached on foot by joining the canal alongside the Tesco car park or drive along the private road towards the golf course which runs from the side of the Museum of Power at Langford. There is very limited parking by the bridge however, and this may be closed at short notice.

You can also explore the falls as part of the Beeleigh Falls and Heybridge Basin walking route which is available on our website at https://www.visitmaldondistrict.co.uk/things-to-do/beeleigh-falls-and-heybridge-basin-p1406661.
