About

This waterway runs through a largely unspoilt part of rural Essex and connects the county town of Chelmsford with the tidal estuary of the River Blackwater at Heybridge Basin. It is 13.8 miles (22.1 km) long and has 13 locks.

Available for recreational boating, canoeing and paddle-boarding with a 14 mile tow path walk alongside . Boat trips operate from Paper Mill Lock and Heybridge Basin

Recreational moorings available on the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation at Heybridge Basin, Hoe Mill Lock, Paper Mill Lock, Sandford Lock and Springfield Basin. For short term visitor moorings contact Heybridge Lock Keeper 07712 079764

Operated by Essex Waterways Ltd for public benefit, volunteers welcomed.
