About

RAF Bradwell Bay is a former Royal Air Force station located on the Dengie Peninsular, approximately 9.5 miles east of Maldon. It is the site of a war memorial to the 121 members of the Allied Air Forces who "in answer to the call of duty left this airfield to fly into the blue forever". The memorial is in the shape of a crashed Mosquito aircraft.

The central area of the airfield was first laid prior to the Second World Ware as a grass landing strip for the nearby Dengie firing ranges off the coast before being rebuilt in 1940 as an large RAF station with concrete runways, hangars and other buildings. 

RAF Bradwell Bay is unique as it was the only fighter station where the Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation (FIDO) was used during the war.

Following the end of the war, the northern section of the airfield was used for the location of the Bradwell A Nuclear Power Station (now decomissioned) and the remains of which can still be seen today.

Several aircraft hangars are still used as storage by local farms and the control tower is now a private home. Agricultural buildings were built on the runways during the 1970's and are now the site of several local businesses.
