Autumn, as the poet John Keats so delightfully put it, has a beauty of its own; with misty mornings, hedgerows ripe with berries and the last lingering days of warmth before the swallows head south for the winter. And there’s no better place to enjoy a lazy, hazy autumn getaway than in the Maldon District.

Thanks to its generally dry climate, the Maldon District is perfect to enjoy the great outdoors long into the autumn months. East Anglia in general has the lowest rainfall of all the UK regions, and Essex, in particular, can be so dry that residents of places like Jerusalem and Beirut need to get their brollies out more often that we do here – which is good news if you’re planning a short break in September, October or November.

When the weather is still mild, autumn is ideal for exploring the 75 miles of coastline that the district has to offer. Early morning mists and earlier dusk give you the chance to see the saltmarsh coast in its full Essex Serpent-style glory, unchanged for centuries. Take the time to stroll around the coastal paths, enjoying a piece of cake in a tea room or a real ale in a country pub, or even a glass of local chardonnay from one of the many vineyards that make the most of the same temperate climate to grow the UK’s finest winemaking grapes.

With seas around the coast generally calm, autumn is still a pleasant time to get out and about on a boat – whether it’s a trip on a historic Thames Sailing Barge or a modern yacht, a fishing expedition into the estuary or a scenic trip up the river.

And if you are unlucky enough to have the odd rainy day, the Maldon District has some great indoor activities to enjoy. For those who love history and heritage, the district has a wide variety of places to enjoy, from the Museum of Power and the Combined Military Services Museum to the unique Thomas Plume’s Library, the Moot Hall and the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. Or for light-hearted family fun, Madison Heights has bowling, skating and soft play, or have a splash around in the pool at the Blackwater Leisure Centre.

Whatever the weather outside is doing, the Maldon District has some highly recommended places to eat and drink, whether you are looking for a cracking full English breakfast to the start the day, a light lunch stop, a friendly pint, a cheerful takeaway or a delicious evening meal in elegant surroundings.
