About

Burnham’s war memorial remembers 98 local soldiers who died in the First World War, and 27 soldiers and 10 civilians who died in the Second World War. The pale stone obelisk, which looks out over the estuary, was designed by the renowned architect R Frank Atkinson with the bronze work undertaken by Mildmay Ironworks, based in the town.

The memorial, which is in the centre of a raised platform, was unveiled by Mrs Leslie and dedicated in 1921 by Anglican minister Reverend D L Williams. It is now a Grade II listed monument. Wreaths are laid here each Remembrance Sunday by local organisations.

The architect, R Frank Atkinson (1871-1923), was known for his shop designs and his work includes Selfridges in London (Grade II-listed).
