About

Rickett's Lock and Gates is a Grade II listed site serving watercraft travelling along the River Chelmer, between Chelmsford and Maldon.

The site was first listed by Historic England in November 1985, and was constructed in around 1797 by engineer John Rennie, who designed many bridges, canals, docks and warehouses throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and was a pioneer in the use of structural cast-iron.

Supervising construction works were completed by Richard Coates, a Maldon local, and the builder of the Ipswich and Stowmarket Navigation.
