About

The Maeldune Heritage Centre, set in the beautiful old St Peter's Church, is one of Maldon's most fascinating visitor attractions, mixing local history, temporary art and craft exhibitions, tourism information and the permanent home of the incredible Maldon Embroidery.

The magnificent Maldon Embroidery, 42ft long, is on permanent display. Telling the story of a thousand years of Maldon history in stiching, including the Battle of Maldon and the sad defeat of Byrhtnoth, it is a must-see for visitors to the town.

In addition, the Maeldune Centre has fascinating displays of local history, interesting historial photographic and video material organised by The Maldon Society and an oral listening station for visitors to use with contributions from over 50 local people to provide memories of all sorts of life in the town. The Centre was recently awarded a Sensory Access Charter Mark for its work in improving access for people with sight and/or hearing impairments.

There is an exciting exhibition programme throughout the year to celebrate and promote the district's local artists. The programme showcases an eclectic mix of painting, photographic, textile art, artisan pottery, mixed media works and other crafts. In addition, the well-stocked gift shop showcases the talents of local artists and craftspeople including the work of members of the Essex Guild of Craftsmen, alng with local preserves and chutneys, Maldon Salt "pigs", locally made soap, books, postcards and more.

The building hosts the Maldon Visitor Information Centre, where volunteers provide in-person tourist information services and can help visitors to get the most from their visit to the town.

Group bookings and individual talks on The Maldon Embroidery and local history can be arranged on request.
